Renegades retain Matthews, Kaur at WBBL Draft

The Melbourne Renegades have secured two of the world’s best cricketers at inaugural WBBL Overseas Draft, retaining superstar duo Hayley Matthews and Harmanpreet Kaur.

Matthews, the West Indies captain, was taken by the Renegades with Pick 3, while Kaur, India’s captain, was selected with Pick 10.

The Renegades placed a bid with Pick 2 on New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, with the Perth Scorchers activating their retention pick.

After retaining Matthews and Kaur, the Renegades passed on their remaining draft picks with a view to directly signing a third overseas player following the Draft.
Both Matthews and Kaur were taken as Platinum picks.

“I’m so pleased we got both of them and I’m looking forward to them working with us again this year,” WBBL Head Coach, Simon Helmot, said.

“It was a tough decision – do we go Harmanpreet at pick three, or do we go Hayley. Fortunately, it worked out for us that Harmanpreet was still available in the second round, so we could still get her as a Platinum pick.

“We know in T20 cricket, experience is the key. It’s a great help for Sophie (Molineux) and I – more information, more knowledge and more experience.

“They’ve got an edge about them, they play hard and that’s what the Renegades need to do this year.”

Matthews, who had previously been a WBBL regular with the Hobart Hurricanes, had her first campaign with the Renegades last year.

She was one of the team’s standout performers with bat and ball, and also captained the side for the final two games following an injury to Sophie Molineux.

The 25-year-old sits second in the ICC’s T20I all-rounder rankings and was the Player of the Tournament as the Mumbai Indians won the inaugural Women’s IPL.

Matthews is currently captaining Barbados Royals in the CPL, after representing Welsh Fire in The Hundred.

Kaur returns to the Renegades and the WBBL after missing last season due to injury.

She was the Player of the Tournament in WBBL|07, after being the Renegades’ leading run-scorer (406) and wicket-taker (15).

Kaur recently represented the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, and led the Mumbai Indians to the Women’s IPL title earlier this year.

The Renegades will begin their WBBL|09 campaign on October 20 against the Brisbane Heat at the CitiPower Centre.
