JFM admits outfield nerves, but stunning catch no fluke

It might be hard to believe after Tuesday night's stunning catch at Marvel Stadium, but Melbourne Renegades young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk says there's nothing more nerve-wracking than fielding in the KFC BBL.

The 19-year-old, who is in his second Big Bash season, shot to viral sensation with an astonishing one-handed grab on the boundary against the Adelaide Strikers.

Fraser-McGurk soared into the air in a leap reminiscent of a slam dunk from basketball superstar Michael Jordan, to pluck a Jake Weatherald sweep from the sky that looked certain to sail over the rope and into the stands.

"He swept the first couple and didn't really hit them, and I was like 'oh I'm on for a catch here' and the whole crowd was saying it as well," Fraser-McGurk said of the grab.

"Then it went up and I just instinctively took the catch. I can't really say much about it to be honest.

"It was a bit like 'throw it up there and hope it goes in'.

"I do try and practice those flat ones on the fence but to actually get one in a game is pretty special."

Despite training himself to take such spectacular catches, the young star admits he still feels nervous fielding at some of Australia's biggest stadiums in front of thousands of people.

"I don't think there's anything more nerve-wracking than fielding in a BBL game," he said after the match.

"You're running everywhere and then you've got to field it and you've got to be on and with the crowd around, especially when you're new to the professional game, it's pretty hard.

"There's plenty of stuff going through your mind, so just knowing that you can take catches and field well is good for the confidence going forward."

The right-handed dasher said taking such catches could also help his batting going forward.

"Yeah, 100 per cent, I reckon if I took that catch and then batted, I'd bat a lot better than I did (on Tuesday), but yeah it definitely can help towards that," Fraser-McGurk said.

Fraser-McGurk's catch evoked memories of another remarkable grab at Marvel Stadium in BBL|08 – albeit on the opposite pocket of the ground.

On that occasion, the competition's highest ever wicket-taker, Ben Laughlin, plucked a Dwayne Bravo miscue from the air while running backwards in a game for the Strikers against the Renegades before, coincidentally, throwing it back to Weatherald who completed the catch.

Fraser-McGurk brushed off suggestions he had taken the catch of the summer already when asked on Tuesday.

"It's a long summer for sure, you'd expect a few better catches," he said.

"I think he was on around 20 and everyone noticed that it was a pretty big moment in the game and something that changed the way the game goes.

"To get up in the end and start our season off with a win is unbelievable so I couldn't be happier."
