At 26, Richardson is in the prime of his career having already represented Australia at both ODI and T20i level and played for three Indian Premier League franchises.

The 190cm quick - who is a product of the Northern Territory pathway into South Australian cricket - said the time was right to make the move to Melbourne for the BBL.

“It’s an exciting challenge and one I’m really looking forward to. The Renegades have a great member and supporter base and a strong list which was important in making the decision to move,” Richardson said.

“I know Andrew McDonald pretty well from his time in South Australia and having chats with the other South Australian players who have been at the Renegades in recent seasons made it clear that it is a well-run club to be involved with,” Richardson added.

Melbourne Renegades Head Coach Andrew McDonald said Richardson’s signing gave him a versatility across the bowling lineup.

“It will be great to have Richo in red and doing an important job for us.  He’s aggressive with the white ball and a very good set of hands in the field which is hugely important under the pressure of the T20 environment,” McDonald said.

Melbourne Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said Richardson was a long-term prospect for the club.

“Kane has been our radar for a while as someone we’d love to have at Etihad Stadium so it’s great to bring that to fruition today. He fits the mould of what we’re about at the Renegades I know he’ll get a big welcome from all our members and fans this summer,” Coventry said.
